Size Guide
Last updated:
“Will a 4 inch ornament look tiny?” “Is 15 oz too big for my mom?” Sizes are hard to picture on a screen, especially when you are buying for someone else. This guide explains the size options you will see in our shop, compares them with everyday objects you already know, and helps you choose based on where the gift will live and how much personalization it needs to carry. Each product page lists the exact size options available for that design; when a product page gives more detail, that detail applies.
Quick picks
- Mugs: 11 oz for an everyday cup of coffee or tea; 15 oz for big-mug people and long mornings.
- Ornaments: 3.5–4 in for busy trees, car mirrors and short names; 5–6 in for long names, several names or a standalone display.
- Plaques and signs: 6–8 in for a desk or bookshelf; 9.5–12 in for a mantel or entry table; 16 in for a wall or a front door.
- Lots of text? Go one size up. Every word stays easier to read.
- Still torn? Email support@yaybestie.com with the product and your wording, and we will suggest a size.
How we describe sizes
Sizes in our shop are nominal sizes for a product family. For ornaments, plaques and signs, the size in inches describes the main dimension of the piece, typically its height or width, whichever is larger; shaped designs, such as hearts or animal outlines, fit within that size. For mugs, the size in ounces describes the capacity class of the mug. Because items are cut, printed and finished one at a time, small variations between pieces are normal. If you need an exact measurement for a particular space, for example a narrow shelf, email us before ordering and we will tell you what to expect for that design.
| Product family | Size options you may see | Good for |

Mugs: 11 oz or 15 oz?
An 11 oz mug is the classic size most people picture when they think “mug”: it holds a regular cup of coffee or tea with room to carry it without spilling. It suits people who make one cup at a time, who take their coffee to go in another cup later, or who like a lighter mug in the hand.
A 15 oz mug is noticeably taller and holds a generous serving, the kind of mug that sees someone through a long video call or a slow Sunday morning. It is a good pick for big coffee drinkers, tea drinkers who like a full pot’s worth, soup-in-a-mug people and anyone whose current favourite mug is the largest in the cupboard.
Quick tests if you are unsure: does your person refill their cup more than once in a morning? Choose 15 oz. Do they use a coffee machine pod that fills a standard cup? 11 oz is a natural fit. Will the mug live on a desk at work? Either works, but 15 oz means fewer trips to the kitchen. And for personalization, a 15 oz mug gives longer names and messages a little more room.
Ornaments: choosing between 3.5 and 6 inches
It helps to picture some familiar objects. A 4 inch ornament is about the size of a drink coaster. A 3.5 inch ornament is a little smaller than that, closer to the palm of a hand. A 6 inch ornament is about the height of a typical smartphone, large enough to be noticed from across a room.
- 3.5–4 in: best for a full tree with lots of other ornaments, a rear-view mirror, a gift-bag tag, or a set where several ornaments hang together. Ideal for one short name and a year.
- 4.5–5 in: the all-rounder. Room for two names and a date, or a name with a short line, while still sitting comfortably on a branch.
- 5.5–6 in: for statement pieces, family ornaments with several names, memorial ornaments that may be displayed on a stand or in a window all year, and designs with detailed illustrations.
Material matters too. Wood is light, so even a 6 inch wooden ornament sits well on a thin branch. Ceramic is heavier for its size, so choose a sturdy branch or a hook. Acrylic is light and catches the light, so larger sizes look especially good in a window.
Plaques and signs: measure the spot first
Plaques and signs are where size matters most, because they go into a specific space. Before choosing, measure the shelf depth and height, the gap on the mantel, or the wall area where it will hang, and compare it with the size options on the product page.
- 6–8 in: desk-sized and bookshelf-friendly. A good fit for a “best friends since” plaque, a teacher thank-you, or a small memorial piece beside a photo frame.
- 9.5–12 in: mantel and entry-table size. Comfortable for a family name with a year, a wedding date or a short quote.
- 16 in: wall and door size. Chosen for house signs, family name signs and statement pieces meant to be read from a few steps away.
Check whether the design is a standing plaque, with a stand or easel, or a hanging sign, with a hook, cord or ribbon; the product page says which. Standing plaques need a little shelf depth behind them for the stand.
Night lights and lamps
Acrylic night lights are sized by their acrylic panel and base, and bottle lamps by the bottle. Each product page lists the size and the power source. As a guide to placement: night lights are made for bedside tables, desks and shelves, where they glow softly at eye level when someone is sitting or lying down; bottle lamps suit shelves, bar carts and window sills. Measure the depth of a narrow shelf before choosing, and leave space for the cable to reach a power source if the base uses USB.
Pillows, blankets and other items
Pillow covers and blankets list their size and whether an insert is included on each product page. For a pillow, compare with a cushion already on the sofa; for a blanket, think about whether it is a lap throw for the couch or something to cover a bed. Magnets, keychains, car hangers and suncatchers are small by nature and the product page gives their dimensions. For car hangers, choose a size that will never block the driver’s view.
How to measure a space in two minutes
- Grab a tape measure or ruler. No tape measure? A standard US letter sheet of paper is 8.5 by 11 inches and makes a handy stand-in.
- For a shelf, measure the height between the shelf and the one above it, and the depth from the front edge to the wall.
- For a wall or door, hold the paper where the sign would go and step back across the room. If one sheet looks lost, a 12 or 16 inch sign will look right; if one sheet already feels big, choose 8 or 10 inches.
- For a tree, look at the ornaments already there. Your new one will sit happily among them if it is about the same size, or stand out if it is one step bigger.
- Write the numbers down and compare them with the size options on the product page before you add to cart.
Sizes by occasion
| Occasion | Popular product | Suggested size | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best friend’s birthday | Mug | 11 oz or 15 oz, matching their current favourite | It replaces the mug they already reach for |
| First Christmas together | Ornament | 4.5–5 in | Two names and a year fit comfortably |
| Family ornament with several names | Ornament | 5.5–6 in | Every name stays readable |
| Housewarming | Plaque or sign | 9.5–12 in, or 16 in for a door | Readable from the entry or across the room |
| Teacher or coworker thank-you | Plaque or mug | 6–8 in plaque, or 11 oz mug | Fits a desk without taking it over |
| Pet memorial | Ornament or suncatcher | 5–6 in | Displayed year-round in a window or on a stand |
Buying a size when you cannot measure
Gifts are often surprises, which makes measuring their shelf tricky. In that case, go for the versatile middle: an 11 oz mug, a 4.5 or 5 inch ornament, or an 8 to 10 inch plaque fits most homes without looking either lost or oversized. If you can, ask a partner or family member to check the space quietly. And remember that the recipient can exchange the size within 60 days of delivery if it does not work, with return postage on us.
Fitting your personalization
The more words, the more a size matters. As a rough rule:
- One short name or a nickname looks good on any size.
- Two names and a date need a medium size or larger.
- Family lists, quotes or long messages are happiest on the largest size offered.
The live preview on each product page shows how your exact text fits. If letters start to look crowded, try a bigger size or trim a word or two. A short, clear message is easier to read and usually more touching anyway.
Weight and sturdiness
Size is not only about how big something looks; it also changes how a piece feels and where it can safely go. Larger ceramic ornaments are heavier, so they suit sturdy lower branches, a hook or a stand rather than a thin branch tip. Large plaques need a stable shelf or a secure wall fixing suited to your wall type. Larger acrylic panels are light but should sit fully in their base. A mug’s size affects its weight when full, which is worth remembering for a grandparent with a weaker grip: an 11 oz mug is easier to lift than a full 15 oz one.
Ordering matching sets in different sizes
Matching items do not have to be the same size. A popular combination is a large family ornament plus small individual ornaments for each child, or a 15 oz mug for the coffee lover and an 11 oz mug for the tea drinker in a couple. Add each item separately with its own size and personalization, and they will ship together in one order.
If the size is not right
If a size turns out to be wrong for the space or the person, you can exchange it for a different size of the same design within 60 days of delivery. We pay the return postage, and any price difference is settled either way. If you notice the wrong size within 24 hours of ordering and production has not started, we can switch it before it is made. See our Returns & Exchanges Policy and Cancel or Change an Order pages for the details.
